Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Review

Traditionally, the second half of February is reserved for the introduction of the new Samsung super star phones. This practice was not absent this year either. In addition to the Samsung Galaxy S series of phones (which brings us the Samsung Galaxy S20 models this year), we were also introduced to something completely new – the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is a make-up exam that Samsung decided to take less than 6 months after introducing us to the Samsung Galaxy Fold phone. Let’s remind – Samsung Galaxy Fold is the first modern folding smartphone, which folds in length. Since this model was not accepted by a wider audience, Samsung decided to try it again and we got the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip – a phone that folds in width. Let’s find out what exactly this phone offers, and then decide if we will like it.

What exactly does the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip look like?

Do you remember the flip phones that were a hit twenty years ago? This model is very reminiscent of them. It overlaps in width and has the shape of a square when you fold it. It is interesting that it even unfolds in the same way as its predecessors so that the “retro” moment is guaranteed. However, when you unfold it, you get a compact and very impressive display of as much as 6.7 inches diagonally.

Another thing that makes the design of this phone attractive is the small 1.1-inch display on the front. This display is there to show you what time it is and to alert you if you have any very important notifications waiting for you. Foreign reporters even say that this is a great solution and a real refreshment if you want to take a break from notifications. When you look at the phone, you only see the current time and which symbol, instead of the crowd that can stress when you take a look at the screen full of notifications.

The colors in which the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip comes to us are purple, black, and gold. The body of the phone itself is made of glass, with an aluminum frame. The display is made of thin and very flexible glass, over which there is a thin layer of plastic, which protects it from external influences. The phone itself opens like a laptop, and at both ends is a magnet that keeps the phone closed.

What kind of camera has the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip?

The camera that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip uses is not the best possible you can find at the moment (the S series models have much more powerful cameras) but it is quite enough to take decent pictures.

At the back are two 12-megapixel cameras – one classic and one wide-angle. In combination, they create photos that are quite good, and in great light even great. Problems can occur in low light, but we will not fade.

There is a 10-megapixel selfie camera on the front of the phone. What makes this phone very attractive is the way you can take selfies with it – put the unlocked phone in front of you and take photos. A stand, selfie stick, or short arms will no longer be an obstacle for your great photos.

What drives the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip?

The core of this phone is a very powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, which is supported by an eight-core processor and 8GB of RAM. This configuration is not the best possible at the moment (again, all the trump cards were picked up by the S series), but it will provide you with a completely good and secure phone.
The 3300mAh battery that supports wireless charging is a good choice and will allow you to use your phone intensively for more than 24 hours without charging.

What are the disadvantages of this phone?

It is still too early to talk about the flaws and shortcomings that this phone has because it has not yet experienced mass use. However, there are a few “weak points” that various tech portals list as the main disadvantages of this model. Those are:

  • The durability of the display. As the specification of the phone itself says, the display can withstand 200,000 folds, which means you can open and close it 100 times a day for the next 5 years. However, the instructions for use also say that the display itself should be handled with care and that bumps and scratches (even with a fingernail) should be avoided.
  • The phone is not water and dust-resistant. This has become a standard measure of protection for modern high-end models, but in this case, it was absent. Why we do not know, but we believe that it will be added in future versions.
  • No headphone jack. Your only choice is Bluetooth, and good old cables, goodbye.
  • It’s too expensive. The news we have now says that it will cost around EUR 1300.
Lastly – does the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip mean the flip phones are back?

We still don’t have the correct answer to this question, but we can say for sure that he opened the door to these classic models. In addition, the trend of larger displays could logically end in this way, because that way the display itself can continue to grow, and we will not have the feeling of carrying a tablet with us.
We really like how this phone looks and we hope to have the opportunity to see more similar models. So our voice goes to folding phones!
