Guess Who

In this article, you can read about the basic rules of the game Guess Who and learn how to play. The object of the game is to be the first player to correctly guess your opponent’s identity before they guess yours.

Sit across from one another and raise the characters on your tray. Shuffle the identity cards and deal one to each player. Place the identity card in your cardholder. Alternating turns, ask the other player one yes-or-no question about their character’s identity. They must answer truthfully yes or no.

As you take turns and rule out possibilities, knock down the characters you rule out based on questions like ‘is your character a man?’. If their response is yes you know they aren’t a woman and can knock down all the women characters. You may ask at any time if they are a specific person. If you are wrong it is their turn. If you are right you win. You also win if your questions eliminate all possible options and narrow down to the last character. Keep track of wins and play the best of five.

The questions you ask in the game Guess Who can be from a closed set or unlimited. It is up to you and your opponent to agree on the set of questions you want to use.

Here is an example of a board for the game Guess Who.

An example of characters that you can use for a game Guess Who is below. The questions you can ask can be about the color of hair as some have red hair, some have blond hair, some brown hair, black hair, some are bald, some have hats, big noses, small noses, blue eyes, different colored eyes… It’s kind of hard to see the eye color on this picture but you can see mustaches, glasses, all these different types of characteristics and you can use those to help narrow down who your opponent has.

If you want to make characters on your own, my advice is to make a list of similarities between some characters. Also, try to avoid making too many unique characters as that would make the game too long.
