Having a baby, above all, means enriching your life with many beautiful things. When a baby arrives in the family, it simply brings a lot of joy to the parents, siblings, as well as to the grandparents and the extended family. Many want to help, give useful advice, get involved, and thus help raise the baby. Still, the biggest burden falls on the parents.
Being a parent, our ancestors say, is the most beautiful, but also the most difficult occupation. It requires a lot of effort, dedication, attention, time, but also constant worries, sometimes fears, disbelief, panic. Every baby confronts you with many new situations and new experiences, in which you need to be “up to the task”.
When it comes to baby hygiene and care – that’s the “fertile ground” for care. There are really many different cosmetic and other baby care products on the market that you need every day, such as diapers, wet wipes, shampoos, bath lotions, bubble baths, oil baths, milk, and body creams, diaper care creams regions, sunscreens, etc.
Choosing quality baby care products, verified and certified manufacturers, which are on a natural basis, eco-friendly, without the addition of harmful chemicals, parabens, and other preservatives, dermatologically tested, without allergens, will surely solve your potential troubles. Wondering why this is so important? Because a baby’s skin is very sensitive, tender, much different from an adult’s skin, and therefore more prone to allergies, rashes, inflammatory processes, and other various irritations.
The appearance of baby’s skin
The baby’s skin is formed during the development of the baby in the mother’s womb, already in the first trimester of pregnancy. The skin is the largest organ in the human body and has several important roles: protective (protects the body from injuries and pathogenic organisms), maintains a constant composition of the internal environment of the human body, participates in metabolism, nerve endings are located in it and serves as a sense of touch. Human skin consists of three layers, which are: the outer layer – the epidermis, the thick middle layer of the skin – the dermis, and subcutaneous tissue.
The maturity of the baby’s skin at birth also depends on the date of birth. When a baby is born at term (around the 40th week of pregnancy), its skin will be smooth, pink, and developed (mature) to perform its functions, while the skin of premature babies will generally be thinner, transparent (blood vessels will be visible), covered tiny hairs and not mature enough to perform its functions.
Why is baby’s skin sensitive?
The skin of all babies also consists of the mentioned three layers, but each layer is almost four times thinner than in adults. The Baby’s skin does not have adequate thermoregulatory ability. The outer layer of the skin in babies is much thinner than in adults, so that is the reason why a baby’s skin can absorb more harmful substances.
Another reason why a baby’s skin is very sensitive is the reduced function of sebaceous and sweat glands in babies. Because of that, babies find it much harder to regulate their body temperature, especially if they overheat, due to the impossibility of sweating. The consequence of insufficient development of sebaceous glands is usually dry skin in babies, which requires adequate and constant hydration.
What matters is how you care for your baby’s skin
The hydrolipid layer of the baby’s skin contains water and fine fatty acids, which represent a natural barrier. That is why it is very important what kind of bath products you use. Baths and bath lotions should be mild, dermatologically tested, free of parabens and other harmful preservatives. And today, there are more and more vegan products on the market, that is. of plant origin which is even gentler for sensitive baby skin. When a baby’s skin is atopic, or even more susceptible to drying out, pediatricians will probably recommend oil baths, which cleanse and hydrate the baby’s skin at the same time.
In addition to the adequate choice of bath, it is important to regularly hydrate your baby’s skin with a cream, body milk, or lotion. The same rule applies when choosing these care products: they should be without preservatives, harmful chemicals, without allergens, on a natural basis, and must be dermatologically tested, which will further confirm the safety of these products for use on baby’s skin.
Another thing that worries all parents when it comes to a baby’s skin. It is a diaper region. Precisely because this part of the skin is constantly covered with a diaper, so it cannot “breathe” freely, but the skin is always moist and warm, diaper rashes or various types of allergic reactions, redness, or even fungal and bacterial infections are not uncommon. That is why it is very important to choose adequate diapers.
There are many different manufacturers on the market, but you should take care of the following: that the diaper is made of fine cellulose, without parabens and other harmful chemicals. It is also recommended to choose diapers that do not contain lotions and perfumes because they can cause skin allergies.
The material from which the diaper is made should be aero permeable so that the airflow still allows the skin to “breathe” somehow. The quality of diapers should be confirmed by certification houses, and the diapers you buy for your baby should also be dermatologically tested. Some diapers on our market also have a so-called humidity indicator that will help you assess when it is necessary to replace the diaper.
An important note related to the diaper region is to clean the skin with clean lukewarm water or wet water-based wipes, without lotion and fragrance, during each dressing, then to dry it well and apply a thin layer of protective cream. In any case, wherever you go, skin hygiene and care products, wet wipes and diapers should definitely be in your baby’s bag.
